Memorial in Britain

The Remembrance Ceremony was held at the Brookwood International Military Cemetery near London to commemorate the 68th anniversary of the victory over fascism and of the end of World War II.

Major General Ivan Schwarz, who grew up in Bytča, attended the ceremony as the last Slovak military veteran of the Western Front living in the Great Britain and as a member of the 311 Czechoslovak bomber squadron.

Together with the Defence Attaché of the Slovak Republic with his Office in London Colonel Vladimír Samko, they honored all the Czech and Slovak soldiers who died fighting for freedom of Britain and Czechoslovakia by the laying of wreaths at the memorial of the Czechoslovak victims. 279 Slovaks served in the British Royal Air Force during WWII. 155 Czechs and Slovaks lost their lives in the service for the RAF during WWII.
