Military Deed of the Year 2012

Acts of selflessness that save human lives or help mitigate effects of disasters, as well as dedicated effort to strengthen civil–military relations – these are the attributes annually awarded as Military Deed of the Year. The prizewinners of the 16th Annual Military Deed of the Year were announced by the Minister of Defence Martin Glváč and the Chief of the General Staff of the AF of the SR Lt. Gen. Peter Vojtek. ‘This is the occasion to recognize and honour those who deserve recognition for helping the others, beyond the scope of their working duties, not only in their home country but also abroad,’ said the Minister of Defence.

The 16 year-old Ladislav Vaškovič received the most votes in a category Help to the Public and Friend of the Army as a founder and administrator of a Facebook profile Being a Soldier is not just a Job, it is a Mission. For more than a year he has been presenting contributions from the field of military and the number of the website fans has been still growing (currently 3.700). ‘I hope for a shift in views of ordinary people on the armed forces and I do believe that this profession will be held in a highest regard,’ said the youngest ever awarded Friend of the Army.

Kamil Kelbel became a prizewinner in a category Lifesaving for saving two persons from a burning apartment in February 2012. He got an elderly couple out of an apartment full of smoke – he had to carry down the 82 year-old woman from the 6th floor in his arms. As he said, he would not hesitate to give a helping hand again, should he find himself in such a situation.

It came as a surprise to the guests and to the presenter of the gala evening to find out about a special award presented to Miroslav Minár. It was his incentive to establish a tradition of the Military Deed of the Year yet back in 1998 that earned him the merit award for special contribution to the development of the Armed Forces of the SR. He was presented with the Commemorative Medal 1st Grade, which was handed to him by the Minister of Defence.

In the end, the Head of Defence Department expressed his thanks to all those who did not win nomination but had been put forward for the award for their outstanding and selfless acts, for helping the others and for their work for their country and citizens of the SR.
