St. Cyril and Methodius Day

Minister of Defence of the SR Martin Glváč took part in the celebration to mark the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of St. Cyril and Methodius to the territory of present day Slovakia. The celebration was held in the Devín Castle.

"It is vital to cherish and foster values these scholars had introduced to our territory. They were instrumental in acknowledgement of the religious autonomy of the Slovak territory; they introduced the Slavic writing (Glagolitic script) and laid foundations of our legal system. Without their contribution, our territory would hardly ever develop into the present-day Slovakia that ranks among modern European countries," said Minister of Defence Martin Glváč in his ceremonial address. Even the Preamble of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic invokes the spiritual heritage of St. Cyril and Methodius and the historical message of Great Moravia.

The ceremony on the occasion of the National Holiday of St. Cyril and Methodius was graced with the presence of the President of the SR Ivan Gašparovič, Chairman of the National Council of the SR Pavol Paška, Prime Minister Robert Fico, members of the Parliament and Government of the SR, the Special Legate of the Holy Father Franc Cardinal Rode, CM and representatives of diplomatic corps in Slovakia.
