On 17 July, the Chief of the General Staff of the AF SR Lieutenant General Peter Vojtek visited the units of the 11th mechanized battalion undergoing pre-deployment training prior to their deployment in Afghanistan.
The tragic death of Daniel Kavuliak made his colleagues from the battalion in Martin prepare and train even harder for their engagement in ISAF operation. "In Daniel Kavuliak we have lost one of the members of the 11th mechanized battalion and of the 1st mechanized brigade, but at the same time we perceive this loss of a Slovak citizen as a loss for the Slovak Republic and for the Slovak Armed Forces as a whole," said in his address to the soldiers Lt. Gen. Vojtek.
According the Chief of Defence, preparation of the upcoming September rotation is in the soldiers’ own hands. He expressed his belief that their preparation and training will maintain the standard set by the previous rotation, which witnessed the tragic incident on 9 July.
The visit of the Chief of Defence to the training area Lešť was unannounced and he watched a coordinated response of the trainees to a simulated rocket attack in the premises simulating the Kandahar entry control point ECP-5. Starting from 1 July, more than 200 soldiers receive training in Lešť; most of them are members of the 11th mechanized battalion from Martin. In September this year they are to relieve some of their colleagues performing tasks in a force protection unit on the airbase in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Part of the exercise Desert Horse is combat firing, which they practiced in a few past days, as well as a wide range of simulated incidents based on real-life experience from ISAF operation.
