Veterans in Hall of Fame

Minister of Defence of the SR Martin Glváč introduced five modern veterans to the Hall of Fame at the traditional ceremony in the Slovak National Theatre. Capt. Stanislav Sikel, Lt. Col. (ret.) Peter Džurdženík, Maj. Jozef Michalov, Msg. Marián Lenčeš, and Sgt. Szabolcs Očkai received awards for exceptional actions that went down in the modern history of the Defence Department.

You represent us in an excellent manner not only in our country, but abroad as well. I am glad that your work is greatly appreciated at each meeting also by our foreign partners,“ said the Head of the Department. He thanked all civil employees of the Department and professional soldiers for their work throughout the year.

The tradition of the induction of the selected modern veterans to the Defence Ministry’s Hall of Fame started in 2010. Including this year’s veterans, there are already 18 soldiers listed in the Hall of Fame. To date, we have more than 6,500 modern veterans in Slovakia. Since 1993, 16,497 Slovak soldiers, out of them 199 women, have rotated in 30 missions.

As the Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Peter Vojtek stated, only the best can be introduced to the Hall of Fame: “I am always glad, when you all return home safe and sound. It is an honour for me to serve with you.

All of the attendees at the meeting honoured the memory of Staff Sergeant Daniel Kavuliak, who died during the attack on Slovak soldiers in Afghanistan in July this year. They commemorated also the other 54 colleagues who had perished in service abroad.

The Minister announced the 17th Annual Military Deed of the Year 2013 at the ceremony. Anyone who knows about extraordinary deeds of soldiers or civil employees of the Defence Department done in 2013 can send suggestions to one of the following categories: Lifesaving, Help to the Public and Friend of the Armed Forces.
