Osprey at Sliač AFB

SVK Minister of Defence Martin Glváč together with Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Milan Maxim paid a visit to a United States Air Forces Europe (USAF E) exercise at Sliač AFB. As part of the exercise in Slovakia, over 70 members of the 7th Special Operations Squadron (7th SOS USAF E) practised landing on two unique CV-22 OSPREY aircraft in low visibility conditions and in a dusty environment. The 7th SOS USAF E also practised flying in formation and conducted air-to-ground firing.
“I am very pleased that the U.S. Armed Forces could stage a high-quality exercise in our country. I think this is yet another proof that cooperation among NATO member states is good. This exercise, too, testifies to the fact that we wish to offer our military training facilities to our partners and train together,” said Minister of Defence Martin Glváč.
The training involved low-level flying, even at night. That the U.S. Air Force had chosen the Slovak Republic as its training location was no coincidence. Slovakia is among a few countries in the world that have both the training facilities as well as the orographic conditions suitable for this type of a training exercise.
“We are pleased that our U.S. counterparts selected our training facilities for their exercise. We are one of the few countries with a military training facility that supports training in dusty conditions, combined with a suitable type of a firing range,” said the head of the SVK MOD. The SVK Armed Forces provided their training facility and basic logistic support with operators to the U.S. troops at Sliač AFB.
“I’d like to thank the Minister of Defence for very good cooperation. This is a proof of a very strong partnership between U.S. and SVK forces. Our soldiers could train here in realistic conditions. The experience they gained during the exercise will benefit them in later missions,” said Norman Thatcher Scharpf, Deputy Chief of Mission of the American Embassy in Bratislava.
