During his visit to Camp General Štefánik in Famagusta, Cyprus, where SVK UNFICYP peacekeepers are stationed and operate on and around the island, SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš unveiled a memorial plaque to General Milan Rastislav Štefánik – a prominent figure in Slovakia's Armed Forces, diplomacy, politics, and science – whose name the camp bears.
The idea of designing a memorial plaque for this camp originated from and was put into action by the M. R. Štefánik Society - Club Partizánske. This is why the General Štefánik Memorial Plaque was unveiled by SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and Chair of the M. R. Štefánik Society - Club Partizánske Sgt 1C Štefan Šefčík.
In his remarks at the unveiling ceremony, SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “General Štefánik has inspired many of us towards action, hard work, and service for the sake of the nation. Therefore, we are pleased that the initiator of the idea to place a commemorative plaque in tribute to General Štefánik at Camp General Štefánik was a society whose members are also active duty soldiers. Today all service personnel can find inspiration from General M. R. Štefánik’s message and legacy.”
The General Štefánik Memorial Plaque unveiling ceremony was attended, among others, by UNFICYP Force Commander Maj Gen Kristin Lund.
