In a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the SVK Minister of Defence took an opportunity to meet with the Slovak service personnel, based at Camp Butmir, who are currently serving with Op EUFOR ALTHEA. The visit was organised as part of the Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) Defence Ministers' Meeting, which saw the Ministers visiting Sarajevo as well as meeting with Maj Gen Friedrich Schrötter, Commander EUFOR. Slovak servicemen and women have been contributing to the stabilisation of the security situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina for more than 12 years.
Speaking in front of the gathered soldiers, Minister Gajdoš remarked: “I am proud of the share of work you are doing. You are making the best name for us, and with your work results you have proved to be real professionals.” Among other things, he was also interested in ways how to potentially improve the working conditions on their tour of duty. Op EUFOR ALTHEA is part and parcel of the EU's comprehensive approach to Bosnia and Herzegovina's security, political, social and economic stabilisation. It fits into the overall mosaic of the EU's stabilisation goals in the Western Balkans region. Launched on 2 December 2004, it came into existence following the transformation of the NATO-led Stabilisation Force (SFOR), which had operated in the years 1997 – 2004 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There, members of the SVK Armed Forces have served since the mission's inception. As of today, Slovakia contributes a total of 41 service personnel to EUFOR ALTHEA.
