The Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic familiarised himself with the work of Military Police (MP) Military Working Dog (MWD) handlers in Hronsek. He was briefed on the past and contemporary history of military cynology within Defence. As part of practical demonstrations, the Minister witnessed an incident response to detain a perpetrator and had a tour of the local firing range. The Minister was accompanied on his trip by the State Secretary at the SVK MOD, Marián Saloň.
Peter Gajdoš highlighted the importance of the MP MWD handlers in supporting a variety of activities, including international crisis management operations. In the past, Slovak dog handlers and MWDs served in Afghanistan too. Minister Gajdoš also recalled the significant role the Military Police have played, among others, in cooperation with the Police Corps, which was best evidenced by canine operations in support of SK PRES. On deployments, the Minister said: “MWD handlers and MWDs have demonstrated their skills during their deployments beyond Slovakia's borders, including to an exercise of the NATO Multinational Military Police Battalion in Poland.” During his visit to the facility, he also welcomed to the MP ranks a new four-legged member, a Belgian Shepherd puppy named Vita. Underscoring the importance of the training facility, Military Police Director Col Michal Migát said: “Last year we trained here approx. 70 MWDs and 90 MWD handlers from across the armed corps of the Slovak and Czech Republics.” Besides MP personnel, the training facility offers training to members of the Police Corps, Financial Management Authority, and Prison and Justice Guard. The Cynology Section at the Training and Cynology Division, Military Police Vlkanová – Hronsek, is the main organisational component for exercising methodological guidance and control in delivering canine operations across Defence. The Chief of the Cynology Section concurrently serves as Chief Canine Specialist of the Ministry of Defence. As part of their duties, MP MWD handlers also conduct patrolling and specialised operations aimed at detecting explosives and drugs.
