1st Slovak National Council was established 169 years ago, Minister Gajdoš commemorates its anniversary in Myjava

SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security/Deputy Parliamentary Chairman Anton Hrnko visited Myjava to remember the 169th anniversary of the establishment of the 1st Slovak National Council, which laid the foundations of parliamentarism and democracy in Slovakia and emerged as the first national political body of the Slovakians.

In this connection, Head of the MOD acknowledged the need to educate young people as well as future soldiers on the history of the Slovak nation. “Today we tend to forget the past hardships, pain and suffering associated with our nation's efforts towards national self-being. Nothing has been given to us for free,” he emphasised.

On the establishment of the 1st Slovak National Council,Chairman of the Defence and Security Committee A. Hrnko remarked: “It is important to commemorate one of the most impactful events of our contemporary history. Our destiny has not been easy, we have had to suffer a lot to get there where we are today – so that now we ourselves can decide over our own affairs and according to our ideas and desires. This has not always been the case, and large numbers of our predecessors have paid with their blood and tears so that today we can be better off. At the origins of the Slovak struggle for national independence was Myjava.”

The First Slovak Parliament was officially established on 16 September 1848 in Vienna and convened for its opening session in the home of widow Anna Kolényová in Myjava on 19 September 1848. Since launching in 1993, 19 September has been among the official remembrance days of the Slovak Republic and precedes the celebrations of SVK Armed Forces Day, which will be held in Brezová pod Bradlom on 22 September 2017.
