Soldiers from 7 countries in Slovakia to practise a joint response in the event of a natural disaster

Soldiers from 7 countries will deploy on[Sereď Garrison's] Váh Training Ground to rehearse responding in the event of a natural disaster and providing assistance to residents from Sunday (24 September). This is the 15th iteration of Exercise Blonde Avalanche 2017 under the TISA project, which brings together Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Ukraine. Taking part in the exercise are also troops from the USA, Austria, and observers from the Czech Republic. The exercise will involve 327 professionals, including those from the Ministry of Interior and the Slovak Red Cross.

The exercise has been organised annually since 2002 under the multinational TISA project on the rotational principle of the 4 partner countries – Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine.  The mission of the soldiers and the domestic crisis management personnel from the countries is to assist local populations in the event of a natural disaster along the River Tisa. In addition, they play a role in mitigating the damage caused by natural disasters and in cleaning up in the aftermath of the disaster in the region. During the exercise, the participants will practise their professional skills at two levels. While the command post phase will be underway at the Simulation Technologies Centre, of the SVK Armed Forces Academy Liptovský Mikuláš, and the training phase will be in progress in the village of Kráľová nad Váhom.

In parallel with the exercise, the TISA Steering Group will be meeting to discuss taking the project forward and extending it to incorporate the River Danube Area of Responsibility. The extension of the AOR may prove strategic in the event of a natural disaster along the River Danube, whereas in such circumstances Slovakia can equally rely on assistance from a cross-border partner.
