Minister Gajdoš holds talks with Greek Minister Kammenos, opens Industry Day with Slovak defence manufacturers in attendance

On his official visit to the Hellenic Republic, SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš held a bilateral meeting with the Greek Minister of National Defence, Mr Panos Kammenos. Topics of discussion included joint training and education options, NATO and EU defence cooperation, and international crisis management operations. “In the interest of deepening our cooperation, I asked Minister Kammenos to consider placing a Greek Armed Forces officer on the staff of the NFIU Slovakia as well as making a contribution to the NATO Trust Fund for Ukraine, where our country is the Lead Nation, remarked Head of the SVK MOD.

At the meeting, Minister Kammenos underscored the restart of the new period of SVK-GRC bilateral defence engagement. He praised the cooperation of our countries within the European Union and NATO, while emphasising that they are jointly committed to countering terrorism and illegal migration. “Of great importance is cooperation in the defence industry, where Slovakia has had a rich tradition,” he accentuated.
 
The European Union's current security and defence initiatives, dominated by the Permanent Structure Cooperation (PESCO) and the European Defence Fund (EDF), featured highly on the agenda in talks. Similarly, this topic was also discussed at the meeting with the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr Nikolaos Voutsis. The Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament praised the work of Slovak UNFICYP personnel in Cyprus.
 
The official programme incorporated an Industry Day, which the SVK Minister of Defence officially opened. To boost Slovakia's domestic defence industry, also in attendance at the event were representatives of Slovak defence manufacturers.
 
On armaments, Head of the SVK MOD remarked: “In Slovakia, for the field of armaments we have set out several priorities as listed in the Long-Term Defence Development Plan until 2030. All of the armaments projects present a big challenge for our local defence companies.As he further mentioned, the basis for furthering the SVK-GRC cooperation will be the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Slovak Republic and the Government of the Hellenic Republic, wherein the respective forms of military economic and technical cooperation will be delineated. Currently, the Draft Plan for Bilateral Cooperation between the SVK and GRC MODs for 2018has been drafted and will be signed by the end of this year.
 
The official programme incorporated a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square, Athens where the Slovak delegation paid tribute to the memory of all Servicemen and women who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
