Over 1,400 SVK soldiers along with 27 members of the Army of the Czech Republic and the Indiana National Guard (USA) will progress to the final phase of the year-long Slovak Shield 2017 series of exercises this Sunday. Their tasks are geared towards the defence of the Slovak Republic in a Multinational Task Force formation.
The aim of this year's exercise is to certify the National Commitment 2013 – Mechanised Brigade (NC13 – Mech Bde) as a capability in support of NATO's collective defence. Commenting on the stand-up process, CHOD Gen Milan Maxim said: “Our intent is to bring the years-long process of building the Mechanised Brigade through to completion and to identify problematic areas so that we can concentrate all our efforts on them.”
The Slovak Shield 2017 series of exercises was created in 2015 in response to the changing security landscape. Annually, it consists of a series of interconnected training activities, which see SVK Armed Forces units engaged in performing assigned tasks. From assistance to state authorities in the event of non-military threats with a graduated build-up of tensions to full-spectrum operations to defend the Slovak Republic – individually and collectively – prior to an attack by an enemy force.
This year's Slovak Shield series will culminate on Thursday (19 Oct) with a Capabilities Demonstration Day and the exercising troops demonstrating a mission to push the enemy force out of a built-up area in line with the battle order.
