Official statement from the Ministry of Defence on its good reputation being damaged

The SVK MOD objects to the intentional attacks orchestrated against it by the independent analyst Jaroslav Naď. This week they have gone beyond assessments of specialist work and grown into personal verbal attacks and slander against MOD and SVK Armed Forces leaders and ordinary civil servants.

His statements are damaging the good reputation of the MOD and Armed Forces, which have, in the long term, been viewed among the most trustworthy state institutions by the public. Through his remarks, Jaroslav Naď belittles the work of those civil servants and service personnel who, for example, participated in drafting strategic documents. Without any sense of responsibility, he purposefully insults and discredits the work of people in Defence.

In another example, we do not know what sources he drew on in his assertion that representatives of the MOD are provided with poor quality support materials to prepare for their meetings. This is not true. Yet Jaroslav Naď insists on this with the intention of casting doubt on the MOD even in front of international partners. He does so, just as he did as the Political Director at the MOD, when he advised Minister Galko to withdraw Slovak soldiers from Cyprus without any political consensus.

Jaroslav Naď likes to profile himself as a specialist who comes from the MOD. Therefore, he must be aware that some information is classified and he himself is subject to the obligation of professional secrecy. Moreover, such secrecy obligation continues to apply even after the end of employment, something Jaroslav Naď has disregarded in the long run and he continues to misuse information. At the same time, we would like to remind that the Act on Protection of Personal Information has been in force across all ministries, including the MOD. The MOD and SVK Armed Forces leaders honour legislative acts and that is why they will not succumb to Jaroslav Naďs nervousness, who would like to have a role to play as a civilian in the MOD's decision-making processes.

Commenting on the false statements, SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “We respect freedom of speech as well as the right to express a specialist opinion that may differ from that of ours. However, the statements of the person who bears no responsibility for the MOD are made up of rumours and gossip and are growing into personal slander against ordinary employees, discrediting the work of each and every employee and professional soldier.”

In his response to the statements, SVK Chief of Defence Gen Milan Maxim said: “The statements by Jaroslav Naď on the absence of the stamina to fight for the Armed Forces offend me and I consider them to be intentional with the aim of damaging our good reputation.”

All things considered, if necessary, in the future the SVK MOD will consider protecting its good reputation by taking legal action against defamation.
