P. Gajdoš: War Veterans Day is a unique opportunity to pay our respect to all brave people who have fought for our better future

SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš remembered the 99th anniversary of the end of World War I at Bratislava's Petržalka – Kopčany Military Cemetery. Together with Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security / Deputy Chairman of the Slovak National Party (SNS) Anton Hrnko, he paid his respect to all war veterans as the world remembers them today.

“War Veterans Day is a unique opportunity to pay our homage to all brave people who have fought for our better future. That we are living in a free country cannot be taken for granted,” emphasised the Minister. He further mentioned that today in some cities Slovak citizens can come across soldiers handing out red poppies, so that they can wear on their coats in tribute to the heroes of WWI and of all armed conflicts in the history of mankind.

“It is our duty to remember the First World War, because it shaped the history of Europe and the world,” said Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Anton Hrnko. At the same time, he stressed that it is important to do our utmost to make sure that such war barbarism will never happen again.

As General Secretary of the SVK MOD Service Office Ján Hoľko added, we need to approach this place of remembrance with humbleness and respect. “WWI claimed large numbers of victims the memory of which we remember at this Act of Remembrance every year,” he said.

To mark War Veterans Day, the Minister of Defence presented the SVK Minister of Defence Commemorative Medals (3rd Grade) to Col (Rtd) Juraj Kayser, Maj (Rtd) Štefan Chňapek, and Col (Rtd) Štefan Dorociak.

After the Act of Remembrance at the cemetery, the Minister participated in the 4th Run in Honour of War Veterans. Together with service members, cadets of the SVK Armed Forces Academy Liptovský Mikuláš, sportsmen and women of the Military Sports Club Dukla Banská Bystrica, led by Olympian Matej Tóth, and other runners, he ran a 5-km race. The run attracted 133 runners.

In another Act of Remembrance, the State Secretary at the SVK Ministry of Defence, Marián Saloň, and Her Majesty's Ambassador to Slovakia, His Excellency Mr Andrew Garth, commemorated the end of WWI in a ceremony held in Bratislava's Šafárik Square.

On this occasion, SVK service personnel handed out red poppies to residents of Bratislava, Zvolen, Rožňava, Prešov and Žilina.
