Official statement from SVK MOD

The SVK Ministry of Defence usually refrains from responding to the statements of the person who violated one of the basic principles of democracy by eavesdropping on journalists and his colleagues. But this time we will make an exception, because we do not want to see the defence and security of the Slovak Republic and its citizens becoming the subject of political wrangling and capitalising on political opportunities by the opposition. This is especially true of Mr Galko, who, despite the fact that he was the Minister of Defence for almost 16 months, failed to notice that basic legislative acts applied across Defence as a whole, which he ignored and violated. Mr Galko, who not only eavesdropped on journalists, but he also listened in on his own people, today speaks of transparency and the rule of law, yet he failed to explain why he had sold functional machine guns at €9 a piece on average, whereas new weapons of this type cost €3000 a piece on average and more. In addition, today at the expense of other modernisation programmes the Armed Forces must purchase spare parts, which Mr Galko himself contracted, that are several times more expensive than the price of a single piece.

The SVK MOD leaders protest against the arguments he presented today, because he has neither the moral right, nor the expertise to do so. Unlike him, the nominees of the Slovak National Party (SNS) he is criticising have worked in Defence for dozens of years. During his 15-plus-month tenure as Minister of Defence, he caused far more damage than any good, and after his eavesdropping scandal he left soldiers with nothing but international shame. No new equipment, no new military clothing. These are indisputable facts. The MOD will release further information on the process of procuring 8x8 and 4x4 combat vehicles after the Government's session on Wednesday, because we find it important that the public be updated on the transparency of the entire process. In line with the Government's decision, the Minister of Defence will inform Members of Parliament on the SVK Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security. The Minister does not need Mr Galko to call on him to do so.
