Minister Gajdoš meets with Macedonian Chief of General Staff Lt Gen M. Velichkovski

SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš today held talks with Lt Gen Metodija Velichkovski, Chief of the General Staff, Army of the Republic of Macedonia, at MOD Main Building. Topics of discussion included international security priorities and bilateral defence engagement.

Head of the SVK MOD informed the Macedonian CHOD of the strategic documents the SVK MOD has formulated in 2017, as well as updating him on the modernisation projects of the SVK Armed Forces. “Our strategic documents underline the primary responsibility of Slovakia for securing its own defence,” emphasised the Minister at the meeting.

Both leaders appreciated the cooperation between Slovak and Macedonian troops on operations abroad. For example, they have served together in Bosnia and Herzegovina (ALTHEA), in Afghanistan (ISAF), and in Iraq.

Also discussed at the meeting was SVK support to the integration of the Republic of Macedonia into the EU and NATO. On this subject, Minister Gajdoš underscored that Slovakia perceives the Western Balkans region as a foreign policy priority. At the meeting, the Minister offered to keep the International Staff Officers Course (ISOC) open to Macedonian soldiers at the SVK Armed Forces Academy. A total of 11 Macedonian officers have so far graduated from ISOC.
