Military Sports Centre Dukla Banská Bystrica awards the 2017 Best Sportspeople

The Military Sports Centre (VŠC) Dukla Banská Bystrica today awarded the 2017 Best Sportspeople. Traditionally, as part of the gala evening, sports personalities were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Speaking at the award ceremony in Banská Bystrica, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “I am proud to say that the sportsmen and women of our Dukla Sports Centre are widely regarded as sports elites in the world, be it in summer or winter sports. Our department, under the leadership of the Slovak National Party (SNS), has made “a resolution” to provide them with the best conditions for their preparation and training, so that they can stay fully focused on their performance.”
In his address, Lt Col Roman Benčík, Director of the VŠC Dukla Banská Bystrica, said: “The year 2017 was successful for the Military Sports Centre Dukla Banská Bystrica. I would like to thank all the sportsmen and women and their coaches for their job well done and for the successes we experienced last year. I also offer my thanks to the SVK MOD, led by Minister Gajdoš. The support we get from the MOD is not only financial and material, but also moral.”
Last year the sportsmen and women of the VŠC Dukla Banská Bystrica won a total of 31 medals at European and World Championships events. Their best successes were recognised in 8 categories.
Marko Mirgorodský, World and European Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom Champion, picked up the Most Successful Junior Sportsman of the Year Award. Tomáš Mráz, the coach who trains Marko Mirgorodský and Jakub Grigar, was once again presented with the Junior Coach of the Year Award.
Marián Jung, powerboat racer, took the Non-Olympic Sports Award. And Veronika Velez Zuzulová, Petra Vlhová, Matej Falat and Andreas Žampa, the members of the quartet from the Alpine Ski Championships at St Moritz, Switzerland, were honoured to receive the Best Collective Performance of the Year Award.
The Extraordinary Contribution to VŠC Dukla Award went to Obrana (Defence) Monthly, published by the SVK MOD, for its coverage of Dukla sportspeople and their successes. Ivan Kováč, former sportsman of the VŠC Dukla and sports reporter of Radio Slovakia, received a copper plaque for his extraordinary contribution as well.
Special thanks was given to biochemist Róbert Mistrík for his crucial role in restoring the reputation of Matej Tóth by explaining the deflections in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP). Both Roman Benčík, Director of the VŠC Dukla Banská Bystrica, and Matej Tóth, race walker, thanked him in person. Also thanks to him, Matej Tóth can continue representing the Slovak Republic at international events.
The Olympic Sports Award went to slalom canoeist Alexander Slafkovský, European Canoe Slalom Champion and 2017 World Vice-Champion. Stanislav Gejdoš, the coach of Alexander Slafkovský, took the Coach of the Year Award.
Among those inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Military Sports Centre Dukla Banská Bystrica were Jan Železný (javelin thrower), Martin Tešovič (weight lifter), Ladislav Mundil (biathlon coach) and Peter Schlank (ski jumping coach).
