Minister P. Gajdoš at Munich Security Conference: Slovakia is an active contributor to security in Europe and in the world

Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš is today attending the prestigious Munich Security Conference, which is among the most significant international forums in the field of defence and security. It is being attended by over 450 military subject matter specialists, senior officials of international groups of global reach and top representatives of countries, to discuss the most serious issues of delivering security and stability and ways of developing the international environment.

Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “The security environment is changing constantly, every day brings new threats that may escalate into armed conflicts. The Munich Security Conference offers a space for constructive dialogues, to facilitate the prevention of or solutions to potential or existing crisis situations. Slovakia is an active contributor to the security of Europe and the stabilisation of several regions in the world, which at this conference makes us a stable and well-respected partner for the UN, the European Union, and NATO.”

During the MSC, world security leaders will discuss the EU’s future tasks and the relations between Russia and the USA. They will devote their attention to the necessity to respect the values of the international community, the conflicts in the Near East, the political developments in Africa’s Sahel region, as well as the need to control spread of weapons and disarmament, especially in the context of the nuclear programme of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

As part of his official programme, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš will today meet with Ms Elżbieta Bieńkowska, the EU Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. They will discuss the European Commission’s current initiatives to boost the development of the EU’s defence industrial base through the European Defence Fund (EDF) and its potential use for funding the successful Slovak “EuroArtillery” PESCO project.

The Minister will also have an opportunity to meet with other high profile actors in international affairs, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger, UK Prime Minister Theresa May, U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis, and his counterparts from NATO and the EU.

The Munich Security Conference was held for the first time in 1963 as an international military convention. It has borne its current name since 2009. Since its inception it has represented an open forum which is an annual platform for informal exchange of opinions and views on world developments among political leaders and personalities.
