On 27-28 February 2018, State Secretary of the SVK Ministry of Defence Róbert Ondrejcsák attended the second meeting of the V4 Senior Body during the HUN V4 Presidency in Budapest. The V4 Deputy Defence Ministers discussed the agenda of the upcoming V4 Defence Ministerial in March and preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit, where important decisions will be taken on strengthening NATO deterrence and defence capabilities, spreading stability across NATO borders, and delivering on the commitments to defence spending, capabilities and operations.
As Róbert Ondrejcsák remarked, based on wide political consensus, Slovakia will have increased its defence spending up to 1.6 per cent of GDP by 2020, with an outlook to 2 per cent of GDP on defence by 2024. Moreover, it will deploy a SVK enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) contingent to the Baltics. “Although we have a SVK Government-approved mandate for 1 year and 2 rotations, we are considering a long-term presence,” said Ondrejcsák.
The State Secretaries also focused on the latest developments in the EUʼs CSDP, especially PESCO. Róbert Ondrejcsák then presented Slovakiaʼs PESCO EuroArtillery project to his partners and invited them to sign up for the initiative.
Meeting in a V4+ROK format, the State Secretaries of the V4 MODs met with South Korean Vice Defence Minister Suh Choo-suk, to discuss the security situation in Eastern Europe and on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the potential areas of cooperation between the V4 and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the field of defence. Cyber defence and armaments industry cooperation are among the prospective areas of future cooperation. South Korea will present a proposal for a joint cyber project.
At the conclusion, R. Ondrejcsák invited his colleagues to the next V4 Senior Body, to be held during the SVK V4 Presidency in the second half of 2018 in Slovakia.
