Minister Gajdoš commemorates 73rd anniversary of Skýcov village tragedy

SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš today commemorated the 73rd anniversary of the tragedy of Skýcov, which was burned down at the end of WWII by German soldiers. In his remarks, he emphasised that it is inevitable to remember events like this one, because only in this way can they serve as a reminder of the war to all those who have a tendency to take the visions of the people spreading extremist views for their own.
SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “It’s hard to imagine today what your parents and grandparents experienced until the ravaged village of Skýcov was liberated by the Red Army’s 2nd Ukrainian Front on 30 March 1945. However, one thing is for sure – for the brave partisans, life in freedom and peace was worth taking a risk and making the ultimate sacrifice. May their bravery be an inspiration for today’s youth, who have a difficult time finding their way to defend their homeland.”
Minister Gajdoš reminded that General Ján Husák, the co-founder of the Zlatno – Skýcov Educational Partisan Trail, had played an important role in raising awareness of WWII events. The educational trail attracts all generations annually.
During WWII the village of Skýcov, located in the district of Zlaté Moravce, was the base of several partisan groups operating in its surroundings and its residents formed their own partisan unit. In an attempt to quash the local support to the national struggle for liberation, German occupation forces burned the village down and deported 13 of its residents to Nazi concentration camps.
Skýcov was liberated on 30 March 1945 by the Red Army’s 2nd Ukrainian Front under the command of Marshal Malinovsky. A memorial to the victims of WWI and WWII was unveiled in the village in 1949.
