The countries of the Central European region are united on defence and security. This has been confirmed by the outcome of todayʼs Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) Meeting of Defence Ministers in Budapest. Ministers agreed to maintain continuity of cooperation, with emphasis on strengthening their response to and preventing the occurrence of security threats. In this connection, they discussed holding another multinational exercise, aimed at containing illegal migration flows heading towards the EUʼs external borders, and addressed the current and future Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) projects.
SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “The security of our citizens is a priority for us. On approval by the SVK Government, we are, therefore, ready to participate in another exercise geared towards the protection of our external borders in the context of uncontrolled migration, which still represents a marked security threat.”
Illegal migration was the key theme of the joint SVK-HUN training activity – Exercise Common Effort 2018, which was attended by 40 SVK personnel just a few days ago as well as that of Exercise COOPSEC17, which was held in Austria in 2017 with the training audience drawn from all CEDC countries.
Exploring options for a joint participation of CEDC countries in PESCO was high on the agenda. In this connection, Minister Gajdoš introduced the successful Slovak EuroArtilleryproject, whereas Slovakia wants to make the best of its expertise in the development and manufacture of mobile artillery systems. The meeting also touched on the Austrian initiative – CBRN Surveillance as a Service, which is aimed at developing chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) monitoring capabilities.
During the bilateral meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Gajdoš and István Simicskó expanded on the joint operations of SVK and HUN troops in Sector 4 of UNFICYP. The main topic was Slovakiaʼs intent to take over all key positions in Sector 4 in line with United Nations Security Council (UN SC) Resolution 2398 (2018). Today, HUNCON, SRBCON and UKRCON are serving operationally with UNFICYP under the command of SLOVCON in Sector 4.
