The Commanders of Engineer Battalion Sereď, SVK Land Forces, and Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade Nitra, SVK Air Force, took over the units’ battle flags on loan from President of the Slovak Republic Andrej Kiska, who concurrently acts as Commander-in-Chief of the Slovak Armed Forces. This tradition commemorates historic milestones of military significance. The battle flag stands as a symbol of the unitʼs military honour, valour and combat glory.
SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “The results of both military units that have received their battle flags on loan from the President during todayʼs ceremony – be it domestic and international crisis management operations, or participation in Allied exercises, or cleaning up in the aftermath of natural disasters and emergencies in Slovakia – speak for themselves.”At the same time, he stressed that preserving and building traditions are among the priorities of the SNS-led MOD.
President Kiska commended the recognised units for their achievements. In his remarks, the President said: “Todayʼs handover of the battle flags on loan to the units is an expression of respect for the work of Service personnel.”
CHOD Gen Milan Maxim underlined the meaning and significance of the battle flag. “Battle flags must be carefully protected not only against damage but also against theft. Otherwise, in the latter case tradition has it that such a unit must be disbanded,” he explained.
Speaking on behalf of all members of Engineer Battalion Sereď, Lt Col František Mihalovič expressed his gratitude for the privilege. He reminded that the unit has performed a wide range of tasks in different parts of the world over the past 78 years of its existence. “We have always performed our tasks at the highest standard, honourably and proudly. Even today, our mission is to defend the independence and freedom of the Slovak Republic,” he said.
Col Ladislav Dovhun, Commander of Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade Nitra, called the takeover of the battle flags as the greatest recognition of his and his colleaguesʼwork. Adding that “We are aware we must never slackened in our efforts to protect the independence, freedom and sovereignty of the Slovak Republic.”
The proposal for awarding the battle flag on loan from the President of the Slovak Republic to a military unit is put forward by the Chief of Defence to the General Secretary of the MODʼs Service Office, who, along with the recommendation of the Military Symbols Council, passes it on to the Minister of Defence. He then submits the proposal to the President of the Slovak Republic. Only 15 battle flags on loan from the President of the Slovak Republic have been deposited with their military units across Slovakia to date.
