P. Gajdoš: Our soldiers deployed on tours of duty abroad represent the Armed Forces and Slovakia as a whole

The service personnel who, in recent months, performed tasks as part of Operation EUFOR ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) in the Middle East have finished their tours of duty and returned to Slovakia on Friday (27 April 2018). They were welcomed during a homecoming ceremony by SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš at Training and Mobilisation Replenishment Base Martin. Currently, 42 SVK personnel are deployed in BiH. At the ceremony, soldiers observed a minute of silence to salute the memory of their deceased fellow soldier, Maj Peter Pavlovský, who passed away in February 2018.
SVK Minister of Defence said: “I want to emphasise that during their tour of duty the soldiers represented not only themselves and our Armed Forces but also Slovakia as a whole. Also thanks to them and their work with the right sense of responsibility and purpose, our country is viewed by our Allies as a stable and reliable partner who contributes to peace and stability in the world.” He went on to add that after Germany Slovakia became, historically for the first time, the Lead Nation in the South of the country.
As 2nd Deputy Chief of Defence/Chief of Staff Maj Gen Miroslav Kocian added, the deployed personnel carried out their tasks honestly and dutifully. “There is no one easy mission or operation, even if it is carried out in Europe. They all require a 100 per cent performance and, above all, operational readiness,” he said, while at the same time expressing his conviction that a tour of duty is a source of personal and professional enrichment for every soldier.
SVK personnel have been deployed on Operation EUFOR ALTHEA from its inception (2 December 2004). For well over a decade, a total of 803 SVK service personnel (26 servicewomen) have rotated in and out of Op EUFOR ALTHEA in BiH.
