War Veterans Forum

On Thursday (3 May), the Historic SVK Parliament Building in Bratislava hosted the 5th International War Veterans Forum Conference under the aegis of Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko and Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš. The conference was held on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the SVK Contingent’s deployment to UNPROFOR in the Former Yugoslavia. In attendance were President of the UN Peacekeeping Forces Association Laurent Attar-Bayrou (FRA), Secretary General of the World Veterans Federation Tom Asplund (FIN), and representatives of veterans organisations from the Czech Republic, Poland, Belgium and Ukraine.

Speaking in front of an audience of more than 100 contemporary veterans and other guests, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Anton Hrnko said: “For the past quarter of the century our contemporary veterans have deployed on international crisis management operations under the Slovak flag, spreading the good name of our Armed Forces and building the reputation of the Slovak Republic on the merit of their service, for which they deserve our sincere Thank You.”

Col (Rtd) Ľubomír Kolenčík, the first commander of the Slovak Engineer Battalion in UNPROFOR and the honorific President of the Slovak War Veterans Union, reflected on the need to build a joint memorial dedicated to the memory of the 57 Slovakians who have died on missions and operations in the service of their country since 1993 and a residential home for war veterans. At the same time, he thanked Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš for his long-time support of contemporary veterans and the MOD for dealing with both issues. “We wish to familiarise even the public at large with the goals and mission Slovak servicemen and women have been fulfilling on operations abroad with professionalism and honour,” said Col (Rtd) Ľubomír Kolenčík.
