SVK Armed Forces to send up to 152 personnel to the Baltics

SVK personnel will undertake tasks in line with the role of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) in Latvia from the second half of this year. The proposal to deploy two 6-month rotations, each of up to 152 active duty soldiers, was today approved by Parliament.

The Slovak contribution to NATO’s eFP in the Baltics attests to Slovakia’s active membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. Two SVK liaison officers have been posted to Latvia since November 2017, to prepare the ground for the troop deployment.

SVK personnel will deploy to Latvia’s Ādaži Training Area and will operate under the Canadian-led eFP Battlegroup, to be exercised in NATO’s eFP role. The SVK contribution will be comprised of a Mechanised Company, a Command and Control Element, a Repairs and Operation Platoon as a support element, and a Military Police Team.

Before receiving the Parliament’s seal of approval, Slovakia’s proposed contribution to NATO’s eFP was given the go-ahead by the Security Council, the Cabinet, the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security, and the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee.
