SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and SVK Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko today, Friday 18 May, met with Chairman of the NATO Military Committee (CMC) General Petr Pavel at MOD Main Building, to discuss key defence issues such as Slovakia's set of commitments and deliverables for the NATO Alliance, the SVK troop deployments on international crisis management missions and operations, as well as the forthcoming NATO Summit in Brussels. Head of the MOD thanked General Pavel for his four-year tenure as CMC.
While noting that Slovakia is mindful of security threats both inside and beyond its borders, Minister Gajdoš said: “The North Atlantic Alliance is Slovakia's security pillar and we are clearly an active member. The latest example of this is the planned deployment of SVK personnel to the Baltics as part of NATO's enhanced Forward Presence.”
Head of the MOD informed Gen Pavel about the International Defence Exhibition Bratislava (IDEB) 2018, which has attracted the highest number of exhibitors so far. Also discussed were the MOD-sponsored Strategic Documents, the ongoing modernization of the Armed Forces, which is closely linked to NATO's 2 per cent benchmark. Both leaders also talked about NATO-EU cooperation, PESCO, Slovakia's EuroArtillery project, and military mobility. On the latter, they were in agreement that military mobility is not just about administrative and legislative measures, but it affects the entire infrastructure of NATO Member States.
A day earlier, on Thursday 17 May, Minister Gajdoš and CHOD Lt Gen Zmeko had the honour and pleasure of welcoming Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) General Denis Mercier to the MOD. General Mercier was updated on the current deployments of SVK personnel on missions and operations abroad and the modernization efforts taken forward by the SVK MOD in furtherance of NATO requirements.
