The SVK MOD will join the 14th edition of the pan-European MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES AT NIGHTfestival on Saturday 19 May. The Military History Museums in Piešťany, Svidník and Dukla will be open to the public for free well until midnight. The aim of the event is to present exhibits and important landmarks of Slovak military history.
Director of the Institute of Military History Bratislava Col Miloslav Čaplovič said: “During MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES AT NIGHT, visitors to our museums will be able to see our expositions in Piešťany, Svidník and Dukla. In this way, too, we want to commemorate the historic events of which jubilees we celebrate this year and thereby raise awareness of history and patriotism, with special focus on young generations.”
In addition to permanent expositions, visitors to the museums will enjoy a variety of side events, including static and dynamic demonstrations of vehicles and troops, close combat and dramatic WWII battle re-enactments, all performed by members of the SVK Armed Forces, Military Police, and Military History Clubs.
The Military History Museum Piešťany will stage an exhibition on SVK legionaries in WWI and a static display of the IL-28 jet bomber. The Military History Museum Svidník will host an exhibition on WWII propaganda in Slovakia. And the Dukla Memorial will present demonstrations of military working dog (MWD) handlers and members of the Firefighting and Rescue Corps, and the evening will wrap up with a bonfire.
