SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš today (19 May) took part in an act of commemoration marking the 73rd anniversary of the end of WWII. He paid tribute to the victims of the most devastating global conflict so far also by participating in a march up to the castle.
Head of the SVK MOD said: “Building traditions is among the MODʼs priorities in line with the SVK Government Manifesto and the SNS Manifesto. That is why we give our full support to events of historic significance where we can join our citizens in remembering WWII victims and express our gratitude to the heroes to whom we are indebted that we can live in peace and freedom today.”
Also in attendance at the event was Radovan Baláž (SNS) MP. He noted that it is important for people to commemorate historic milestones. “I am pleased that so many young people and children have turned up for the event today. We can shed more light on what happened in the past so that they can eschew evil in the future and will not let themselves be lured by those who defy the principles of democracy. There should be as many events of this kind as possible.” he added.
Veľká lúka (Great Meadow), the venue of the commemoration, used to serve as a reserve airfield during the Slovak National Uprising (SNP). It was there that the SNP units concentrated outdated military equipment to make Tri Duby (Three Oaks airfield, today’s Sliač) fully available for SNP operations. The German Luftwaffe often directed its air raids at such ʻluringʼtargets, without knowing that their attention was drawn away from Tri Duby airfield, home to the Combined Squadron.
