P. Gajdoš: Active duty service in favour of our country is not a job but a mission

MOD leaders announced the recipients of the 2017 Military Deed of the Year Award at the 21st Military Deed of the Year Annual Award Gala Evening held at the MOD Club. Service personnel and citizens are eligible for the Award in four categories – A Friend of the Armed Forces, Assistance to the Public, Rescue of Life, and Special Prize – for their outstanding acts of bravery and service to the community and for bringing credit to the Armed Forces. Also in attendance at the award ceremony was Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Anton Hrnko.

In his remarks, SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “I am immensely proud of our soldiers who serve in favour of our country not only on duty but also off duty. Their deeds show that they remain loyal to the Oath of Allegiance in each and every situation and that they are always here for Slovak citizens.” He continued: “This evening is also about the people from the civilian world who have bonds to our department, who bring credit to the Armed Forces, and who help preserve military traditions.”

In his remarks, SVK CHOD Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko said: “I am very pleased that I have the honour to serve alongside my colleagues who have received the Awards today.” He further noted that he is particularly happy about the Friend of the Armed Forces category, because “it deepens the bonds between the Armed Forces and our society, to the service of which our soldiers are committed.”

Laureate of the 2017 Military Deed of the Year Award in the Rescue of Life category is SSgt Lukáš Cmorej, of CSS Bn Prešov. As a medic, he made the best of his medical skills after rescuing a drowning boy.

The 2017 Military Deed of the Year Award in the Assistance to the Public category went to Lt Col Marián Turanský and the staff of the Training and K9 Department, Military Police Vlkanová – Hronsek. The military policemen cooperate with Childrenʼs Home Liptovský Hrádok – Kráľova Lehota by gifting toys to kids at Christmas and organising a summer camp for them, where they undergo topographical, transport, medical and military working dog (MWD) handlers training.

Laureate of the 2017 Military Deed of the Year Award in the Friend of the Armed Forces category is the news reporter and the head of the TV News at the JOJ TV channel, Veronika Homolová Tóthová, for her military history documentary Heydrich and 74 Women. She was also recognised in the 2015 Military Deed of the Year Award for another military history documentary Heydrich: A Story of Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, which describes the assassination of the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia Reynhard Heydrich.

The 2017 Military Deed of the Year Award in the Special Prize category went to Maj Gen (Rtd) Emil Boček, who is the last surviving pilot of No. 310 Fighter Squadron RAF in WWII and Chairman of the Czechoslovak Legionary Community. Despite his advanced age of 95, Maj Gen (Rtd) Boček still attends numerous commemorative ceremonies organised by the MOD and gives his authentic testimony about the horrors of WWII.
