The Security Council and the Cabinet have today (23 May) approved the 155mm ZUZANA 2 Self-propelled Gun Howitzer (SpGH) procurement project for the SVK Armed Forces. It follows from the document that a total of 25 pcs of the state-of-the-art Slovak-made self-propelled howitzer will come into service with the SVK Armed Forces in stages until 2022, to be delivered by Konštrukta Defence, the state-run joint stock company and the exclusive certified sole manufacturer of the artillery system. The overall costs for the years 2018-2022, including personnel training, spare parts, and basic munitions, are estimated at €175 million, VAT included.
Speaking about the artillery system, SVK Minister of Defence stated: “Undoubtedly, the ZUZANA 2 Self-propelled Gun Howitzer is a unique product of the Slovak defence industry. Its technical specifications are comparable to those of other artillery systems that are fielded with the most advanced Armed Forces of NATO Member States. It features new elements and technical enhancements, incorporating the lessons learned from the operational use of the previous Zuzana SpGH variant. This is clearly the best choice for the SVK Armed Forces.” He stressed that the SNS-led MOD’s priority is to make sure that the SVK defence industry is involved in SVK defence modernization projects to the maximum extent possible.
The 155mm ZUZANA 2 SpGH provides indirect fire support to armed forces conducting land operations. The advantages include enhanced ballistic protection, crew protection against the effects of WMD, and a huge munitions capacity. Based on the SVK Armed Forcesʼoperational requirements, Self-propelled Artillery Unit Michalovce will receive 8 155mm ZUZANA 2 SpGHs, to form 3 standard artillery batteries, and will replace 16 ZUZANA 1 SpGHs for the latest variant. An additional ZUZANA 2 will be used for training purposes.
Through this project, which follows from the Long-Term Defence Development Plan with an Outlook to 2030 and which is in conformity with the White Book on Defence of the Slovak Republic, we commit to action to fulfil a PESCO requirement.
