US and SVK troops to train shoulder to shoulder in Martin

Starting from 1 July 2018, US troops will train shoulder to shoulder with SVK personnel in Martin. As part of an 18-month training programme, SVK and US troops will work on increasing their interoperability and developing civil-military (CIMIC) capabilities. The presence of US Army personnel in Slovakia in order to take part in the training activity has today been approved by MPs in Parliament.

On the SVK-US training activity, SVK Minister of Defence said: “The joint training is an opportunity for facilitating an exchange of expertise and consolidating capabilities. The United States is our strategic partner and prominent Ally. Yet our soldiers, too, have a lot to offer. That is why I believe the training activity will be beneficial to both sides. Last but not least, it will give our soldiers an opportunity to test their skills they gained during the training they received in the US.” He further stressed that this will be a non-combat training activity and that US Army soldiers will exercise in Slovakia only for the 18-month training period. The costs of the US deployment to Slovakia are borne by the deploying country. The SVK Parliament has delineated the scope of activity for the US personnel who will be present in the territory of Slovakia.

A total of 4 US Army soldiers will take part in the CIMIC training as part of two 9-month rotations. The CIMIC and interoperability enhancement activity, initiated by the US, was given a go-ahead by the SVK Security Council and the SVK Cabinet at the end of May 2018.
