Members of the SVK Air Force along with 19 NATO and Partner Air Forces are participating in Exercise Mace XIX. This 19th edition of the largest air exercise in Slovakia will test the capabilities of almost 300 Slovak airmen and air defenders and the same number of Allied and Partner personnel. The main aim of Exercise Mace XIX is to practise the standard operating procedures for planning and conducting tactical air operations and coordinating Surface-Based Air Defence (SBAD) forces.
Reflecting on the exercise in terms of interoperability and Host Nation Support, SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “The international exercise of this size is a brilliant opportunity for practising standard operating procedures and the ability to operate together. Of course, this is also an opportunity for us to show how well we can handle the role of Host Nation Support.”
Highlighting the significance of drills in a realistic battlespace environment, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko added: “Exercise Mace XIX is a unique opportunity for our personnel to test the standard drills for conducting tactical air missions against real SBAD assets under modern battlespace conditions.”
Exercise Mace is the third such training event that has taken place in Slovakia since 2014. In addition to SVK Air Force aircraft and SBAD assets, 22 pieces of Allied and Partner aircraft and assets will be involved in the exercise. The exercise will run until 27 July 2018. The exercise will be inspected, among others, by officials from NATO HQ AIRCOM Ramstein with responsibility for air operations and training.
