Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš commemorates the 74th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising

Slovak Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš along with General Secretary of the SVK MODʼs Service Office Ján Hoľko, DCHOD Maj Gen Miroslav Kocian, Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini and other members of the Cabinet, and MOD officials today (27 August 2018) commemorated the 74th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP).

On the SNP, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “The Slovak National Uprising had a significant impact on the formation of our nation on the way towards democracy and freedom. It attests to the strength and determination of the Slovak people to defend their country and its freedom at every cost, even if it meant paying the ultimate sacrifice.” He noted that commemorating historical landmarks is of great importance. “One should always bear in mind that history is part of the identity of each nation,” he said.

The aim of the SNP, involving a 70,000-strong Slovak insurgent force, was to fight the then Slovak State regime and its Nazi German allies. Having been crushed, the SNP survived through pockets of partisan resistance until the liberation of the country by the Red Army. Thanks to the SNP, Slovakia joined the European democratisation and anti-Nazi wave.
