Minister Gajdoš today (29 August 2018) attended the nation-wide commemorations marking the 74th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica. The commemorations were attended by Slovakiaʼs three highest constitutional representatives, State Secretary of the Ministry of National Defence of Romania Nicolae Nasta, and participants of the anti-Nazi resistance in WW2.
Before the official commemorations a wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Romanian War Cemetery in Zvolen, where Minister Gajdoš and the Romanian delegation paid tribute to the memory of over 10,000 Romanian soldiers who made the most consequential contribution to liberating Nazi-occupied Slovakia at the end of WWII.
Todayʼs official programme commenced with a flypast of SVK Air Force aircraft over the SNP Memorial. Traditionally, the programme was supported by side events, including a parachute drop by SVK paratroopers, a static display of military equipment, and dynamic demonstrations.
The Slovak National Uprising, one of the largest anti-Nazi uprisings in Europe, involved almost 80,000 soldiers and partisans under the command of Brigadier Ján Golian and Division General Rudolf Viest. The aim of the SNP was to open up the way for advancing allied forces in the campaign to liberate Czechoslovakia. However, the Uprising was crushed and the insurgent force resorted to partisan warfare.
