Minister Gajdoš commemorates the 170th anniversary of the 1st Slovak National Council in Myjava

Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and General Secretary of the SVK MOD Service Office Ján Hoľko along with Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko, members of the Cabinet, and Members of Parliament today (19 September 2018) commemorated the 170th anniversary of the establishment of the 1st Slovak National Council, the first Slovak political body to lead the struggle for national liberation.
In his speech, Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko underlined the significance of the 1848 revolutionary year. “For the first time in history Slovakians decided to take up arms in their hands and fight for their natural rights. It was not easy for freedom to be born, nor was it easy for our State to be born. The message of the revolutionary days and the Slovak Volunteers is: ‘Let us value freedom and State independence.’In light of this, we are proud that a successful and viable Slovakia celebrates 25 years this year,” he said.
Describing the crucial role the 1st Slovak National Council took on in the 1848 revolutionary year, Minister Gajdoš said: “We had to go the hard way to establish our national rights. The 1st Slovak National Council as a revolutionary body of Slovakians was a spark of hope for our people in an effort to achieve recognition of their rights.”
The 1st Slovak National Council, led by Ľudovít Štúr, Jozef Miloslav Hurban and Michal Miloslav Hodža, was established on 16 September 1848 in Vienna as a national revolutionary body to coordinate the military campaigns of the Slovak Volunteers in the years 1848-1949. For the first time the Council convened in the home of widow Anna Kolényová, todayʼs Slovak National Council Museum, in Myjava on 19 September 1848.
