Additional soldiers return home from Cyprus, Slovakia is now fully responsible for Sector 4

With the completion of their year-long deployment to UNFICYP, Slovak soldiers have returned home from Cyprus. They were welcomed by Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko during a homecoming ceremony at the Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade in Nitra. 67 service personnel, of whom 4 were servicewomen, were back home after the latest rotation of troops.

On the growing responsibility of Slovak personnel in UNFICYP, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “Our soldiers in Cyprus are a stable and respected security force component. This is underpinned by the fact that since 1 September 2018 we have been entrusted by the United Nations with the whole of Sector 4. Therefore, my thanks go out to all professional soldiers who have contributed through their responsible performance of duties to building a good reputation of the Slovak Republic and the entire Slovak Armed Forces abroad.”

On the highest standards of performance of SVK personnel in UNFICYP, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko said: “Takeover of responsibility for operational tasks in the whole of Sector 4 was and is a unique testament to the professionalism of both the command staff and all members of the Slovak Armed Forces who have been deployed to UNFICYP as part of this rotation.”

The aim of the Slovak deployment to Cyprus is to sustain ceasefire between the belligerent parties in the buffer zone. A total of 3,300 SVK Armed Forces personnel have rotated in and out of UNFICYP to date.
