New entry conditions for the elite 5th Special Forces Regiment Žilina are to come into force as from Monday 1 October 2018. Accordingly, candidates will be no longer subject to the requirement to serve for two years in the Armed Forces before qualifying to join the Regiment. Under the new arrangements, they can submit their application forms to the Regiment on completion of basic military training (BMT).
Commenting on the new entry criteria, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “In no way does this change of conditions means that we prefer quantity to quality. Highest physical and psychological standards will continue to be expected of every member of the elite Žilina-based Regiment. Otherwise, we would risk losing their lives on challenging operations, and we will not let that happen. Only the best of the best can serve with the 5th Regiment.”
Explaining the rationale behind the changes, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko said: “We are realistic, we have been following the demographic development in terms of quantity, with emphasis on quality. In the current situation we need to push ahead with progressive solutions. It makes sense to shorten the transition from a civilian to a soldier/SOF operative. On the one hand, we will be more effective in turning a soldier – newcomer, unaffected by other Services, into what we need him to be, and on the other hand, we will relieve, at least to some extent, the burden on other Services in transferring their personnel to the Special Operations Forces.”
Giving his first hand insight, Commander 5th Special Forces Regiment Col Miroslav Gardlo said: “What we expect from the updated ‘Chief of Defence Directive on the Selection Process for the 5th Special Forces Regiment Žilinaʼis that the manning levels will increase, there will be a simplified procedure for transferring the successful candidates of the selection process to the Regiment, and that we will see a more dynamic transition of new soldiers fresh out of basic training to the ranks of the Regiment or special forces.” He added that, come Monday, validity of the selection results will be extended from 2 to 4 years. Moreover, until the end of 2021 it will be possible to accept a candidate who has met the selection criteria of the previous Directive but has not been accepted for the service in the 5th Special Forces Regiment.
Next rounds of the selection process will most probably take place in April and June 2019. For more information, go to www.regrutacia.sk or visit the Army Recruitment Teams in regional capitals, depending on where you are domiciled.
