Pilots of the crashed Aero L-39 Albatros are out of life-threatening danger

Pilots of the crashed Aero L-39 Albatros military jet trainer are out of life-threatening danger. At the moment they are receiving medical treatment in hospital. An investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched. Based on the decision of the SVK Air Force Commander, the L-39 fleet has been grounded until the accident is fully investigated. This information was today conveyed in a statement by Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko, and SVK Air Force Commander Maj Gen Ľubomír Svoboda at the site of the crash.
Speaking to media at the scene of the crash, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “I want to emphasise that the pilots were experienced and in the given situation they did exactly what they were expected to do. Most importantly, they are alive and out of life-threatening danger.”
Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko added that the family members had immediately been informed of the accident and offered support from the MOD and Armed Forces.
SVK Air Force Commander Maj Gen Ľubomír Svoboda explained that the pilots had ejected out of the aircraft after an engine failure. “Most importantly, they turned the aircraft to come down in an uninhabited area,” he said.
The Aero L-39 Albatros jet trainer crashed today at about 14.07hrs local time between Sliač and Kováčová. The aircraft was manufactured in 1989. The crew were 1st Class Pilots.
