The SVK MOD is showcasing the SVK Army 8x8 armoured IFV prototype at the Nitra Motor Show 2018 this week. Visitors can see first-hand this state-of-the-art SVK defence industry product developed in cooperation with Finland.
Ms Gabriela Matečná, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: “Historically, for the first time we have military equipment on display at the Nitra Motor Show here at the Agrocomplex Centre. I want to thank the Defence Minister for giving this unique experience to the visitors of the national exhibition centre. I hope we will extend the cooperation between our ministries by displaying together at different exhibitions in the future.”
Peter Gajdoš, Minister of Defence, said: “We have staged several displays of the 8x8 armoured IFV in public, because we want our citizens to have a realistic idea about the vehicle we want to equip the Army with. Needless to say, the production of the vehicle will boost employment in Slovakia, and I think the message we are trying to get across is clear – we have decided to go the way of manufacturing our own domestic product and giving jobs to our people.” In this context, he underlined the advantage this solution brings to the country: Deliveries of spare parts by our suppliers will continue even in the event of crisis.“This means under such circumstances we will not be dependent on the help of another country which, naturally, will prefer its own interests,” he added.
Minister Gajdoš further noted that the MOD leadership wants to have young, modern, well-trained and well-equipped armed forces. “Modern equipment, quality conditions of service for soldiers and their training go hand-in-hand. Based on this, we are pushing ahead with a truly systemic and systematic modernization for the benefit of soldiers and hence of all Slovak citizens,” he emphasised.
The 8x8 IFV prototype has already been through military trials, the results of which will be worked into the 8x8 IFV project proposal, to be discussed by the Security Council and the Cabinet. Once approved by them, the MOD will go ahead with procuring up to 81 vehicles of this type in stages by 2024. The price of the 8x8 IFV fleet should not exceed €417 million, with the estimated price of a single vehicle less than €4 million, VAT included.
