Borsó Hill Memorial under reconstruction by Slovak Military Forests and Estates

The Slovak Military Forests and Estates is reconstructing the Borsó Hill Memorial at the village of Hejce, Hungary. This is the second such reconstruction since the place of commemoration was built following the crash of the AN-24 military aircraft on top of the hill. The symbolic oak memorial posts installed at the site of the tragedy stand in memory of the victims who perished in what is the greatest air tragedy in Slovak military history. Sadly, the AN-24 passenger aircraft went down on its way home from KFOR, Kosovo on 19 January 2006.

Commenting on the reconstruction in progress, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “Taking good care of these symbolic memorials in remembrance of the soldiers whose lives were extinguished is the least the MOD can do to reconfirm the pledge we made – that we will never forget.”

Another Memorial in memory of the 2006 air disaster victims is located directly in the centre of Hejce. The Ministry of Defence holds annual commemoration ceremonies at both Memorials in and at Hejce.

In this context, the Defence Minister reminded that works on yet another Memorial dedicated to all men and women of the Slovak Armed Forces who have died on missions and operations abroad have entered their final stage in Liptovský Mikuláš. “We simply need a point of focus for our remembrance, we owe it to them,” emphasised the Defence Minister.
