To mark the 100th anniversary of the World War One Armistice, delegations of participating countries to the WW1 Centenary commemoration at the Nécropole Nationale de Chestres (Chestres National Necropolis) in the French town of Vouziers paid tribute, among others, to fallen Czechoslovak soldiers. Also in attendance at the commemoration ceremony was a delegation of Slovakia and members of the SVK Armed Forces Guard of Honour.
The commemoration ceremony saw national delegations bringing in reliquaries of soil from the WW1 battlefields to be stored at the Chestres National Necropolisin a joint urn containing letters with speeches recording the merits of fallen soldiers.
The soil from Slovakia was taken by employees of the SVK Institute of Military History from a partially preserved trench that was once part of the WW1 Austro-Hungarian Army defensive trench line in 1914-1915, running along the south-western edge of the village of Vyšný Komárnik in close vicinity to the Dukla Pass.
During the commemoration, delegations from Slovakia, Czechia, Belgium, Russia, France and Germany paid tribute to the 21st and 22nd Regiments, Czechoslovak Rifle Brigade, who participated in operations east of the town of Vouziers. The ceremony included acts of commemoration at the Czechoslovak Memorial and the Memorial to the Fallen Soldiers in the main square of Vouziers. As part of the official programme, delegations visited the lycée de Vouziers named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk.
