Slovak personnel will deploy to Iraq again, Parliamentary Defence and Security Committee approves their deployment

SVK Army and Military Police personnel will serve in Iraq as part of the new non-combat NATO Mission Iraq (NMI). The proposal for their deployment has been approved by MPs on the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security today (13 November). The deployment of up to 42 personnel still needs to be given the green light by Parliament.

The NATO Mission Iraq was established following the transformation of the NATO Training and Capacity Building Initiative in Iraq (NTCB-I) as early as July 2018. The tasks of SVK Army and MP personnel in the Republic of Iraq will be based on the decision of NATO and will be performed in line with the approved mandate, international law, and the consent of the Republic of Iraq.

At a working session with members of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security, Head of the MOD introduced an assessment of the defence plans and planned defence capabilities of the Slovak Republic as part of the NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP).
