A two-day meeting of the V4 Defence Ministers, the first one in this format during the Slovak V4 Presidency, has officially opened today (14 November) in Tatranská Lomnica in the High Tatras.
On the Visegrad Group and the SVK V4 Presidency, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “The motto of the Slovak V4 Presidency is ‘Dynamic Visegrad for Europe’. In the area of defence it has a special meaning because it is important to face security threats united and to act together in response to them. That is why as part of our Presidency we continue in the set trend of active cooperation as set out in the ‘Long-Term Vision of the Visegrad Countries on Deepening their Defence Cooperation’. At the same time, we consider this format to be an effective instrument for advancing our common positions on current EU security and defence initiatives and topical issues of the North Atlantic Alliance.” As he further noted, the V4 partners today addressed the joint regional cooperation on defence capabilities development, potential joint procurement, and support to the V4 defence industries.
On the formation of joint military units, the Ministers took stock of the preparations for the stand-up of the V4 European Union Battlegroup (V4 EU BG), to be on stand-by immediately after the end of the Slovak V4 Presidency in the second half of 2019, as well as for the Joint Logistic Support Group Headquarters (JLSG HQ).
On military education, training and exercises, the Declaration of Intent Concerning the Professional Military Education Enhancement Initiative was signed in Warsaw yesterday (13 November), the V4 Training, Education and Exercise Synchronization Conference concluded in Pezinok today (14 November), and the Visegrad Military Medicine Conference (VIMIMED 2019), which is a novelty, will be held on 4-6 February 2019 in Slovakia.
The official programme of the meeting will continue on Thursday (15 November). Coordinating the V4 positions on the EU’s current defence and security initiatives ahead of the next week’s Foreign Affairs Council/Defence Ministers (FAC/DEF) meeting in Brussels and the review of the progress made since the July NATO Summit will top the agenda.
