Thanks to their joint defence activities, the cooperation between the Slovak Republic and the French Republic has been excellent. Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and French Minister of State for Defence Geneviève Darrieussecq were in agreement on this point during their meeting today (11 December) at MOD Main Building. On her visit to the MOD, the French Minister of State for Defence was accompanied by the French Ambassador to Slovakia, His Excellency Mr Christophe Leonzi.
Speaking on the SVK-FRA defence partnership, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “The high level of cooperation in the field of defence between both countries acknowledges our common values and interests in terms of moving in a pro-European and pro-Atlantic direction. As potential areas of cooperation we can see not only defence industry and armaments but also education and training.” On the latter, he cited French language courses for SVK service personnel.
At the same time, Head of the MOD underlined the joint defence activities of the Slovak and French Republics thus far. Among the recent examples of collaboration is the training of French Armed Forces personnel with toxic chemicals at the CBRN Training and Testing Centre Zemianske Kostoľany, as well as the participation of FRA service personnel in Ex TOXIC VALLEY 2018 and the Slovak Air Fest (SIAF) 2018.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš updated Minister of State for Defence Geneviève Darrieussecq on the modernization programmes being implemented by the SVK MOD in line with the 2030 Long-Term Defence Development Plan, the increase in the 2019 Defence Budget, and the performance of NATO and EU commitments. They also discussed the security and defence cooperation between France and the Visegrad Group (V4) countries under the SVK V4 Presidency. Last but not least, they spoke about joint historic commemorations, for example, the Great War commemorations at Darney.
