SlovakAid: Slovak Republic hands over humanitarian aid for Afghanistan

Today (14 December) the Slovak Republic handed over humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, gifting 540 new school uniforms for pupils from Mazar-e-Sharif. The humanitarian aid, collected by the Head Office of Ecumenical Pastoral Service in the SVK Armed Forces and Armed Corps in cooperation with the SVK Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, was dispatched to Afghanistan from Bratislava’s M. R. Štefánik Airport after a ceremony attended by officials from the SVK Defence, Interior, and Foreign and European Affairs Ministries.

On charity for local communities in Afghanistan, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “This project as a whole is a clear expression of solidarity on which terror-torn Afghanistan depends heavily. Therefore, I am convinced that humanitarian aid is an exemplary example of how international crisis management missions and operations help local residents in crisis regions. The missions and operations on which our soldiers are deployed are not just about military support but also about humanitarian aid.” He reminded that as of today 36 service personnel are deployed in support of the Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan.

On Slovak aid to war-affected countries, Director of the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry’s International Organizations, Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid Department Karla Wursterová said: “This is not Slovakias first humanitarian aid for countries where it is most needed. For example, in 2016 we prepared a humanitarian convoy for Syria, and this year we have delivered medical aid to four Iraqi hospitals.”

On the countries where aid is supplied on the basis of international humanitarian principles, Interior Minister Denisa Saková said: “This relates to the countries that have been caught up in war conflicts or countries that have been suffering from the consequences of natural disasters.”

This is the 7th such humanitarian aid consignment the Head Office of Ecumenical Pastoral Service in the SVK Armed Forces and Armed Corps has handed over for delivery to Afghanistan. This year Slovak aid for Afghanistan, supported financially by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, contains school uniforms for 295 boys and 245 girls.
