NATOʼs eFP: Visiting SVK troops in the Baltics ahead of Christmas

Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš, joined by President/C-in-C of the SVK Armed Forces Andrej Kiska, paid a visit to SVK personnel serving with the multinational enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battlegroup in Latvia. As part of their pre-Christmas visit, they brought a Christmas tree, symbolic Christmas parcels, and ingredients for the traditional Christmas sauerkraut soup as a tradition.

SVK troops have been deployed to Latvia as part of NATOʼs eFP initiative, to demonstrate the cohesion and solidarity of NATO Allies as well as their commitment and ability to respond to any potential aggression. Through NATOʼs eFP, Slovakia demonstrates it is an active member of the Alliance, rather than just being a consumer of security.

151 SVK troops (4 servicewomen) are currently serving with the multinational eFP BG in the Baltics on a rotational basis. The next rotation of SVK troops is due in January 2019. In the past, SVK personnel of Task Group Štefánik were posted to Latvia on an eFP deployment as part of a joint V4 training initiative in 2017.
