The Slovak Ministry of Defence has received over €6 million from the Quality of Environment Operational Programme (QE OP), to remediate environmental pollutants throughout Martin Barracks, Michalovce Barracks, and Piešťany Barracks. The remediation projects and geological oversight will be fully financed from EU funds.
The current state of the environment in the grounds of the barracks has resulted from irresponsible conduct of troops stationed there in the years 1935-1992, leaving a legacy of environmental degradation.
Commenting on the clean-up efforts, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Thanks to our successful projects, we can remediate pollutants without having to burden our budget. The money saved will be reinvested to fund other important modernization projects and enhance the quality of the Service conditions for military personnel.”
The aim of the remediation efforts is to contain the effects of environmental pollutants, limit their spread in the underground water, soil and rock environments, eradicate or reduce to acceptable levels the contamination of underground water, soil and rocks in a way that will make them suitable for their future use, as well as ensuring remediation waste management during the remediation works and land regeneration after the clean-up.
Remediation of almost 12,000m2 of contaminated land will be underway in the said locations between 2019 and 2020. Contractors for the remediation works will be selected via the ongoing competitive bidding process.
