Delegation from Slovakia to Warsaw commemorates 20th anniversary of Poland’s entry into NATO

Today (10 March 2019), a delegation from Slovakia visited Warsaw to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Polandʼs entry into NATO. In attendance at the official celebrations were the V4 prime ministers and defence ministers, as were NATO representatives. As part of his trip to Poland, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš also met with SVK soldiers working within NATO structures in Poland.

Defence Minister Gajdoš said: “This year the Visegrad Group countries, with the exception of Slovakia, commemorate 20 years of NATO membership. And while we are the one with the shortest time in the Alliance from among the V4 partners, nothing can change the fact that, just like our partners, we have earned a status of being a responsible and respected member over the past 15 years of our membership and the voice of our region is heard in NATO.”

Today, there are 193 members of the SVK Armed Forces serving abroad within NATO. 18 personnel are posted to Poland, 16 are working in NATO and EU structures, and 2 are serving with the National Support Element (NSE). More than 8,500 SVK personnel have rotated in and out of Alliance missions and operations to date. As part of the SVK-POL defence cooperation throughout 2018, Slovakia participated in 18 exercises and training activities, of which 11 were held in Slovakia.
