The V4 defence ministers met for an informal meeting in Prague today (12 March 2019), to discuss current issues and areas of NATO and EU cooperation. At the same time, they joined the V4 presidents for the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Czech Republicʼs entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.
Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Slovakia has a stable place in Euro-Atlantic structures, however, of equal importance is regional cooperation, thanks to which our voice in NATO and the EU is stronger.”
Also discussed at todayʼs meeting was the issue of V4 contributions to international crisis management. In this respect, Minister Gajdoš updated his counterparts on the current engagement of SVK personnel in missions and operations abroad.
Heads of the V4 MODs also spoke about defence modernization and cooperation on EU projects. Minister Gajdoš underscored Slovakiaʼs participation in 8 Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) projects and the Indirect Fire Support project, known as EuroArtillery, led by Slovakia. He said: “We support strong and ambitious projects that have the potential of increasing the interoperability of the armed forces of participating countries.” The discussion also covered third state participation in PESCO projects.
Today, there are 193 members of the SVK Armed Forces serving abroad within NATO, whereas more than 8,500 SVK personnel have rotated in and out of Alliance missions and operations to date.
